LEED ˇ§Goldˇ¨ Green Building Award in Shanghai Office

The new office in Atkins (Shanghai) has fulfilled the LEED Green Building Rating System and successfully achieved LEED ˇ§Goldˇ¨ Green Building Award for Commercial Interiors granted by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This project does not only provide our staff and clients with a healthy, safe, green and low-carbon environment, but also demonstrates our commitment towards ˇ§Sustainable Developmentˇ¨ and ˇ§Carbon Critical Designˇ¨ as a leading engineering consulting firm.

The office renovation work was completed in July 2009 which is located in the 21/F and 22/F of Ciroˇ¦s Plaza with the area of 30,140 square foot. The key green building features include water-saving fixture installation, energy-saving lighting via photo sensors and motion sensors throughout the whole office, exemplary material and resource management such as reuse and recycling of building materials, natural daylight and view harvesting. In particular outstanding performance was achieved in Material & Resource category comprising material reuse at the percentage of 76.55%, as well as materials extracted and manufactured regionally by 31.2% and 51.4% respectively. In addition to these, an innovative strategy such as ˇ§green cleaning programmeˇ¨ was implemented which involved non-hazardous cleaning product procurement with respect to Green Seal GS 37 standard, green housekeeping programme and staff training before and after occupancy.

The LEED application process required close coordination with suppliers, architects and the building management and took over 1 year to complete. In order to recognize the effort and commitment in achieving the first LEED certification award in our Group office, we would like to thank the Water & Environment Team of Atkins China. In particular, Susana Halliday the team Divisional Director, Danny NG, the LEED AP who managed and administrated the application process and technical submissions and Yang Xian, the primary coordinator with various parties. In addition, we would like to thank Li Yuan who provided the support for implementation during the application process.

The success of first ˇ§LEED-CI Gold Certificationˇ¨ sets up a benchmark and brings a green positive message for other group-wide Atkins offices.
