Design of Sewage Treatment Works
Atkins undertook the detailed design of this Hong Kong 50MLD sewage treatment works with tertiary treatment facilities and long sea outfall.

 
     
Sewage Treatment Process Design
Atkins provided the design of the BAFF plant, the largest of its type in the UK, to Plympton Sewage Treatment Works for Costain Engineering Ltd.
 
     

Sewage Treatment Works
Atkins provided the outline design and tender documents for the 42MLD treatment works, sludge centre and transfer pipelines in Bognor and Littlehampton in the UK for Southern Water to comply with the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.

 
     

Study to Improve Sewage Effluent from an Existing Wastewater Treatment Plant
Atkins undertook the study to investigate options to improve the effluent quality from an existing prison complex, which includes Hong Kong's largest commercial laundry. The existing treatment plant included septic tanks, downward flow filtration units and an extended aeration activated sludge plant.

Sewage Treatment Study
We were appointed as part of the PHARE programme, funded by the EU to carry out a major study of a 400MLD sewage treatment plant and the associated sludge disposal strategy for the greater Warsaw region to identify options for process modifications with financial assessments.
 
     

Study to Improve the Operation and Maintenance of Existing Sewage Treatment Installations
We were responsible for monitoring the daily operation as well as supervision of routine maintenance and replacement of the Rotating Biological Contactors to fulfil the EPD's effluent discharge standards from the Yan Chai Hospital in Hong Kong.

 
     
Inflow and Infiltration Reduction Strategy
Atkins was commissioned by EPD of the HKSAR to undertake the Pilot Study to develop a strategy to identify and reduce inflow and infiltration to the Hong Kong sewerage system. We undertook field investigations to identify, quantify and locate inflow and infiltration sources to develop a prioritised package of investigation works to formulate a generic methodology for investigating and managing inflows and infiltration throughout Hong Kong.

Sewage Transfer
Atkins provided a full range of consultancy services in association with Balfours International Ltd to the HK Drainage Services Department for the construction of a 7.4km long gravity tunnel, 2km of twin rising mains and a pumping station for the transfer of sewage effluent from the two sewage treatment works as part of the overall strategy to improve the water quality of the Tolo Harbour.

 
     
Wastewater Infrastructure Project Management
Atkins was the lead consultants for the Pollution Control Department of Thailand's Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. We were in charge with the project management and the design and construction supervision of 125km of the pipeline collection system aligned on both banks of the Chao Phray River to collect and convey sewage flows from both sides of the river to treatment works.
 
     
Sewage Disposal Scheme
As a key member of the AB2H for the consultancy for the project for the HKSAR Drainage Services Department, Atkins undertook the geophysical surveys, construction methods, TBMs, tunnel linings, contract packaging and cost estimates for proposed sewage tunnels.
