Ma Wan and Kap Shui Mun Channels Cable Crossings
CLP awarded a design and build contract in April 2000 to Skanska International Civil Engineering AB (main contractor), supported by A J Lucas (HDD subcontractor), ABB (cable supplier) and Atkins (design consultant). The tender design proposed six HDD drillholes 550mm in diameter. The Ma Wan crossings (2 Nos.) are each 1,300m long. The Kap Shui Mun crossings (4 Nos.) are each 850m long. Atkins was responsible for the design of all civil works for the project, including the design of the outer steel casings to resist both permanent and temporary loadings including pulling loads during installation. The design took into account the varying ground conditions along the route, including decomposed rock and potentially unstable fault zones.

Admiralty to Pacific Place Pedestrian Subway
This subway links the basement shopping arcade at Pacific Place directly to the Admiralty MTR Station at concourse level. It is approximately 120m long with a clear subway width of 7.1m. To avoid traffic disturbance during construction, the section under Queensway was built as a driven tunnel. The rest of the subway was constructed by the cut and cover method. Atkins carried out the design and construction supervision of this pedestrian subway and station entrance on behalf of both the Mass Transit Railway Corporation and the developer, Kornhill Developments Limited.

Cable Crossing at Pui O
As part of the CLP Power (CLP) upgrade of the existing power supply infrastructure, two new cable crossings were constructed by Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD). They are located between the LCSD campsite at Pui O beach and Cheung Chau. Both Pui O crossings were 320m long with 660mm internal diameter. AJ Lucas Hong Kong was the specialist HDD contractor and Atkins was employed as the design engineer and site supervisor responsible for the design of all civil works. These works included the design of the outer steel casings to resist both temporary (installation) and permanent loadings.
