DRILL AND BLAST

Contract for CLP Power Tunnelling Projects Consultancy Services ˇV Kwai Chung Cable Tunnel
The Kwai Chung project consisted of three permanent shafts, one temporary shaft and a tunnel. The 1000m long, 4.5m span tunnel was constructed by drill and blast from a number of faces. Temporary support was provided by shotcrete and rockbolts, with insitu concrete used for the permanent lining. Atkins provided preliminary and reference design, and construction supervision for this project, which was constructed under a design-and-build contract.

Gautrain Rapid Rail Link ˇV Design Package 3
The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link will provide an 80km link between Johannesburg and South Africa 's capital of Pretoria . Atkins is the lead designer for DP3, the southern 15.5km of the route, which is constructed completely in tunnels with cover of 20m to 80m. Atkins' Hong Kong office is responsible for the design of the 4.3km section of dual track tunnel (11m span) constructed by drill and blast from Mushroom Park to Marlboro Portal. Temporary and permanent tunnel support is provided by rock bolts and shotcrete, with limited lengths of insitu concrete. The Hong Kong office is also responsible for the External Strategic Design Review of the single track tunnel support design.

Cheung Ching Tunnels ˇV Route 3 Expressway
The Cheung Ching tunnels are an integral part of the Route 3 project that run in an east-west direction below Tsing Yi Island linking the West Kowloon Expressway with the Lantau Fixed (bridge) crossing. The tunnels were designed as 1.5km long, twin bore, 3-lane rock tunnels with each tunnel having excavated dimensions of approximately 17m wide by 10m high. The two tunnels are separated by a 13 to 20m wide rock pillar. Atkins was the consultant for planning, route selection, site investigations, detailed design, documentation, construction and supervision of tunnels, portals and slopeworks .

Tate's Cairn Highway Tunnel
The 3.9km long Tate's Cairn Tunnel Scheme provides twin two-lane tunnels between the Diamond Hill area of north east Kowloon and the Siu Lek Yuen area of Sha Tin together with approach roads linking the tunnel into the road system of both areas. The project was awarded as a ˇ§design, build and operateˇ¨ franchise. A group of consulting firms was appointed to fulfill independent checking roles and to ensure quality control. Atkins was responsible for the independent checking of all civil works in the highway and ventilation tunnels. This covered design office and site checking controls and the issue of check certificates for each element of work.

KCRC Contract No. DB320 West Rail Phase I ˇV Ha Kwai Chung Tunnels
A major element of DB320 Kwai Tsing Tunnels project was the 1.7km Ha Kwai Chung Tunnel which comprised a twin track, single bored tunnel with a central dividing wall. This 13m span tunnel was excavated using drill-and-blast techniques. For this tunnel, Atkins undertook design of the tunnel alignment, portals, shafts, general arrangement and temporary (rock bolt and shotcrete) and permanent tunnel support (cast insitu concrete lining). In addition assessments were undertaken of the impact of blasting on the adjacent sensitive receivers, including natural and man made slopes and existing structures.
