Express Rail Link ¡V C802 Detailed Design for Tunnels and Associated Structures (South)

The Express Rail Link (XRL) will connect Hong Kong¡¦s Kowloon peninsular with the Boundary and the Chinese national railway network by means of a high speed railway on a dedicated 26km corridor through Hong Kong¡¦s New Territories. With speeds of up to 200kmh, ERL trains will take just 15 mins to reach Shenzhen from down town Hong Kong.

Atkins has undertaken the detailed design for 15km of the XRL route length. The 802 Contract comprises the design of the running tunnels from north of the West Kowloon Terminus (WKT) to the Pat Heung Ventilation Building (PHV) including associated structures, such as ventilation buildings shafts/adits, road works and the necessary enabling works.?

DB320 Kwai Tsing Tunnels
Atkins was the lead designers for this design and build contract for the West Rail project. The works involved the design of bored tunnels, cut and cover tunnels and ventilation buildings. It involved the innovative use of the first EPBM (Earth Pressure Balance Machine) in Hong Kong for construction of railway tunnels. Tunnelling by TBM under sensitive buildings was required and the project also included drill and blast tunnels through the urban area.

Kowloon Southern Link KDB200
Atkins was the lead consultant for the Preliminary and Scheme Design of the northern section of the Kowloon Southern Link to extend West Rail to Tsim Sha Tsui to allow it to be connected through to Hung Hom. The KSL includes 4.5km of tunnel to be constructed by a combination of TBM bored, mined and cut and cover methods in West Kowloon . The Northern Section includes a major underground station to be constructed by cut and cover methods under major roads at West Kowloon .

Lai King Tunnels ¡V Lantau and Airport Railway
The Lai King Tunnel is a section of 35km long Lantau Airport Railway (LAR) between the Lai King Station Extension and the Mid Tunnel Ventilation Building. This tunnel section comprises four new 600 meter long, rectangular and D-shaped running tunnels, three short ventilation adits and a 100 meter long, D-shaped service tunnel connecting between the new tunnel and the existing running tunnel. Atkins was the detailed designer of this project.

KCRC - East Rail Extension Contract No. LDB201 - Sheung Shui to Chau Tau Tunnels
Independent Checking Engineer Services were provided for all aspects of the tunnel temporary works and permanent works for this 4.3km long railway tunnel project to be excavated by EPBM.

KDB200 ¡V West Kowloon Station and Tunnels
KDB300 & KDB400 Tunnels
Atkins carried out the tender design for D&B bids for West Kowloon Station and bored (EPBM) tunnels from East Tsim Sha Tsui Station to West Kowloon Station.

Alternative tender designs were also produced to minimise impacts on the tunnel section and to reduce station size.

Tender designs were also produced for D&B bids for the tunnels from the end of West Rail to West Kowloon Station. These included both cut and cover and bored (TBM) tunnel options.
