CLP Cable Tunnels, Hong Kong
Atkins was commissioned by CLP to prepare reference designs and contract documentation for four large cable tunnels located at; Kwai Chung, Tsz Wan Shan, Chi Ma Wan and Tuen Mun. Various tunnelling techniques were used including, TBM, Drill & Blast and Pipe Jacking. The scope of work included pre-contract consultancy services including cost estimation, preparation of scheme design, contract documents, contract strategy, value and risk management workshops and tender assessment. A key aspect of the assignment was to assist CLP in developing a new enhanced from of contract procurement. This involved the use of Key Performance Indicators to assess the contractor's performance. |

CLP Cable Crossings at Pui O, Hong Kong
Atkins was responsible for the Scheme Design, contract documentation and provided assistance with the procurement of the Design and Build Contract for the design and construction of cable crossings at Pui O for CLP. Atkins was also responsible for the site supervision services of the works. The project comprised 300m long horizontal directional drilling (HDD) drives, which would house 132kV electrical power circuits serving Cheung Chau. HDD was selected due to the environmentally sensitive area of Pui O beach. The cable crossings involved drilling 300mm pilot holes using a combination of magnetic and gyroscopic survey tools to monitor the drill head position. The pilot holes were then enlarged by reaming. |

CLP Ma Wan and Kap Shui Mun Channels Cable Crossing, Hong Kong
Atkins was appointed as the civil works designer by the Design and Build contractor for this technically challenging horizontal directional drilling (HDD) project between Sham Tseng, Ma Wan and Lantau Island for CLP. The project consisted of 6km of 550mm diameter HDD drives to house both 132kV and 11kV power cables. The works also included land cable trenches and reception chambers at the landfall areas. This is the longest cable crossing using HDD constructed in Hong Kong and was extremely challenging due to its length, geometric arrangement and ground conditions. |
