CLP Environmental Review for Castle Peak Cable Tunnel, Hong Kong
Atkins was responsible for the preparation of an Environmental Assessment for CLP's ¡§Castle Peak Cable Tunnel¡¨ Project. The cable tunnel will be bored through the mountainous area of Castle Peak by use of tunnel boring machine (TBM) to minimize environmental impacts associated with the power cables, and to increase the reliability of the system. The tunnel will be approximately 4.5km long with a 4.5m internal diameter to contain eight 132kV cable circuits. The Environmental Assessment provides evaluation of the potential environmental impacts associated with the construction and operation of the Project, including noise, landscape and visual resources, ecology, dust, waste management, and water quality issues. Mitigation measures and the requirements on environmental monitoring and audit have been recommended.

 
     
CLP Asbestos Investigations at Substations, Hong Kong
Atkins was appointed by CLP as a term consultant to complete asbestos investigations and hazard assessments for various substations. The services provided included; Site Investigation ¡V to identify the extent of asbestos on site by thorough inspection, Asbestos Investigation Reports ¡V to detail the findings of the investigation, Abatement Plans ¡V to assist the client in managing the removal of asbestos in the premises before refurbishment or decommissioning or, where appropriate, before demolition, and Asbestos Management Plans ¡V to assist the Client in managing existing asbestos in the premises, before removal.
 
     

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Ningbo Huadong LPG Bulk Terminal Facility, China
Atkins was appointed to undertake the ESIA on behalf of British Petroleum (BP) for the construction and operation of two 250,000m 3 underground rock caverns for the storage of propane and butane, a 5,000 ton wharf and a 50,000 ton wharf to be used for incoming vessels. The ESIA assessed environmental implications of the construction and operation of the project and was undertaken in accordance with BP Amoco's corporate policy. A social impact assessment was also conducted to determine the likely impacts that the project may have over the socio-economic situation of the project area. Public consultation was undertaken with the relevant government authorities and local villages at the early stages of the project to identify impacts and concerns.

 
     
Environmental Impact Assessments for the Demolition of Kwai Chung & Kennedy Town Incinerators, Hong Kong
Atkins was responsible for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for demolition of two decommissioned incinerator plants at Kwai Chung and Kennedy Town . The EIA reports were amongst the first approved under Hong Kong 's Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance. One of the key issues that was addressed, was the land contamination associated with the operation of the incinerators. A full scale contaminated land site investigation was undertaken and a site remediation plan was developed. Environmental assessments were undertaken for air quality, noise, landfill gas, water quality and environmental monitoring and audit.
 

 

 


     
Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Changbei Gas Field, China
The Changbei project was the first onshore upstream project initiated by Shell in China . The project covers an area of 1600 km 2 with over 100 gas well heads. The project supplies 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas to the eastern areas of China , including Beijing , Tianjin , Hebei and Shandong . Atkins was part of an integrated project team during the evaluation and assessment phase to identify and assess the environmental and social impacts of the Changbei gas field development. The ESIA was accepted by the State Environmental Protection Agency and was awarded a ¡¥First Class Award' in 2002 by the China Engineering Consulting Association ¡V Oil / Gas Steering Committee.
 
     
Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Guangdong LNG Terminal & Trunkline, China
This project was the first LNG Terminal to be established in China . The project includes a costal terminal to receive, store, re-gasify and send out natural gas delivered in liquid form by ocean going tankers and more than 360km of natural gas pipeline network leading to major population centers. The project will provide fuel to five power stations and natural gas to Hong Kong via submarine pipelines that connect to the distribution centers. Atkins was appointed by BP / CNOOC as the international consultant for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Study to address both PRC and International Standards and BP's corporate expectations.
