KCRC Kowloon Southern Link Contract KDB200 West Kowloon Station and Tunnels

The Kowloon Southern Link (KSL) forms a core element of Hong Kong 's railway network. It will be a strategically important link between KCRC's West Rail and their East Rail Extension to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station. Atkins China Ltd was appointed as the Lead Design Consultant in December 2002 with the overall responsibility for the preliminary, scheme and tender design of the KSL (North Section) comprising 1.9km of twin track running tunnels and incorporating a new West Kowloon underground railway station and Yau Ma Tei tunnel ventilation building.

Whampoa People Mover System

As part of the Shatin Central Link SDC 400 study, Atkins was commissioned to carry out the scheme design of an Automated People Mover system (APM) to increase patronage to Hung Hom Station to include the Whampoa catchment area.

The scope of work included assessment of the the latest technology available for people mover systems, patronage studies, feasibility study for the engineering works including overground, underground options, depot layouts, systems scheme designs and RAMS requirements.

 
     

The Commercial Scale Wind Turbine Pilot Project

Atkins was appointed the owners Engineer to carry out the feasibility study of constructing a commercial scale wind turbine in Hong Kong. The study included the assessment and comparison of suitable sites and a review of the wind assessment and generation capacity.

Main tasks included the logistical study of the movement of large pieces of plant to the site, construction methods, alternative tower systems, capital and recurrent cost estimates, grid connection strategy and a review of the wind resource assessment. Great attention was paid to the environmental nature of the project to minimize impact to the environment and adopt environmentally sensitive construction methods.
