BRIDGES - ASSESSMENT AND MODIFICATION

Tsuen Wan Bypass
As part of its role as the Contractors designer for the DB320 ¡V Kwai Tsing Tunnel, Atkins was responsible for assessing the nearby Tuen Mun Bypass viaduct for the effects of ground movements from the adjacent excavation.

The study involved carrying out a condition survey and structural assessment if the viaduct. Baseline monitoring points and AAA levels were proposed and agreed. An interpretative report assessing the impact of ground movements and interpreting the measured structure movements was prepared and submitted to HyD. Mitigation measures were proposed in case critical action levels were exceeded.

KDB 200 ¡V West Kowloon Station and Tunnels - ICE
Atkins was appointed by the Contractor as the ICE for the permanent works designs. The scope included the design of all Highway related infrastructure including the following aspects:

-

Checking of the extension of the existing Jordan Road Footbridge FB14 to the new station

-

Modification of the foundation arrangement to allow the foundation to be sleeved through the tunnels

-

Checking of all roadworks

Shatin Central Link - Central Link SDC700 and SDC400
As part of its role as KCRCs scheme designer for the Shatin Central Link, Atkins was responsible for the assessment of several highway structures along the alignment that would be affected by the proposed railway alignment.

The assessment of the structures was carried out using soil structure interaction to assess the effects of ground movements and AAA levels were established. A condition survey was carried out and reports prepared on the condition and structural assessment for approval by the appropriate authority. Several structures were assessed included:

SDC400 ¡V Cheong Wan Road Viaduct (condition survey, parapet strengthening, complete and partial reprovision options)

Tates Cairn Tunnel Approach Viaducts and Prince Edward Road Interchange (ground movement assessment, underpinning, ground treatment)

SDC 700 - Upper Albert Road Bridge (condition survey, underpinning)

Hatton Road Service Reservoir Access Bridge
As part of this project Atkins carried out the alignment and highway design for the maintenance access to the fresh water reservoir and an EVA to the pumping station. The access is located on a public access to the country park and care was needed to minimize the impact on the existing path and its drainage structures, while complying with maintenance vehicle access requirements.

The existing access bridge across Kotewall Road was assessed and alternatives proposed to widen or reprovide the bridge and reroute the services contained inside the deck.
