Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Changbei Gas Field
Atkins was commissioned to undertake the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) for the development of the largest natural gas field in Shaanxi province. The project comprised the development of over 100 well headers and over 155km of gas pipelines through dune fields and agricultural areas within a concession area of 1,588km 2 . An extensive environmental and social survey was undertaken by our technical specialists to compile a comprehensive GIS database for the ESIA and to assist project engineers to consider the current conditions in the detailed design phase. The ESIA not only assessed the potential impacts from the development project to the local environment and communities, but also served as an effective planning guideline for the pipeline alignment options with the aim to reduce impacts to as low as practicable levels.

Guangdong LNG Terminal and Trunkline Project
Atkins undertook the international ESIA for this Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) marine terminal and trunkline. The project was initiated by the Chinese Government to improve regional air quality by providing cleaner fuels to major urban cities in Guangdong Province and was the first LNG marine terminal established in the PRC. The ESIA assessed environmental and social impacts from construction and operation of the LNG receiving terminal and the 215km pipeline, which traversed six administrative regions in Guangdong Province. Atkins undertook detailed field surveys of the entire pipeline corridor, environmental baseline monitoring, public consultation and stakeholder engagement, quantitative air, noise and water quality modelling, and provided recommendations to alleviate adverse impacts. Atkins also provided integrated design and engineering solutions to the project by providing terrain hazard and safety assessments in tandem with the environmental and social impact assessment for pipeline alignment options.

BP Ningbo Huadong LPG Bulk Breaking Project ESIA
Atkins was appointed to undertake the environmental and social impact assessment for the construction and operation of the Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) bulk breaking plant on Daxie Island, Ningbo. The project comprised two 250,000m 3 underground rock caverns for the storage of propane and butane, two wharfs to be used for incoming shipping vessels and associated process facilities. The ESIA assessed the potential impacts from the construction and operation of the terminal on the surrounding environment and social issues of the local community. The ESIA also assessed the impacts on a wider scale, such as green house gas emissions and CO 2 reduction targets for emissions trading. Training workshops on environmental management systems (EMS) were also provided by Atkins to key site personnel at the beginning of the construction phase to prepare the project towards ISO14000 accreditation
