ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Detian Tourism Study, Guangxi, China
Atkins undertook the detailed planning study for this scenic area located on the China and Vietnam border, centered around the second largest cross-boundary waterfall in the world. The project included developing an economically feasible solution to attract the local and international market and to ensure protection of natural resources and the Zhuang ethnic culture.

 
     
Planning and Development Study on Hong Kong Island South and Lamma Island
Atkins managed this multidisciplinary planning and development study that involved two stages: strategic planning and detailed engineering feasibility. Stage 1 included: vision statements, development strategies, planning intentions, recreation and tourism study, landscape value appraisal, landscape management guidelines and conservation strategy. Stage 2 involved: detailed investigations of geotechnical issues, traffic, environmental impacts, drainage, sewerage and utilities as well as, layout plans, master landscape plans, implementation strategies and financial appraisals for 17 development sites.
 
     
Concept Master Plan for Shanghai Chongming Dongtan
Atkins provided environmental planning and tourism input for this master planning study covering an area of 150km 2 on Chongming Island, Shanghai. The aim of the master plan was to develop the area into a model for sustainable development within China, which would function self-sufficiently, both in terms of environmental aspects, as well as social and economic development. Atkins particular responsibilities were to address waste management, energy generation, clean industry and technologies and recreation and tourism proposals. We also provided guidance on the management and educational functions of the valuable Ramsar wetland at Chongming Dongtan.
