Atkins provides services on Geotechnical Inspection of slopes and retaining walls including both Annual Routine Maintenance Inspection and Engineering Inspection. Inspections are carried out by professional staff to identify potential hazards and to identify maintenance works required to ensure the slope features' proper functioning. Recommendations for emergency stability improvement works and needs for stability study will be made from the inspection and desktop studies. We have significant experience on such kind of works for private owners, estate management companies and government authorities.

In addition, Atkins also provides services on rock anchor monitoring, which included design of monitoring requirements to review the performance of existing rock anchor system, preparation of tender documentation and preparation of performance assessment reports for submitting to Buildings Department.

Atkins provides services to private owners, where Dangerous Hillside (DH) Orders are issued by Buildings Department. We can investigate the stability of the slopes and/or retaining wall and advise on whether they meet the current legislation requirements. We have lots of experience in designing cost effective and economic upgrading work to achieve acceptable stability requirements and hence to lift the DH Orders.

Atkins is also specialized in blasting assessment. We provide services to prepare the blasting assessment report that recommends charge per delay for blasting operation due to vibration limits the sensitive receivers can sustain and to proposes monitoring and instrumentation scheme for verification of the limits during the blasting works. Our experience engineers also undertake the upgrading works design for the sub-standard slope features or retaining walls in the vicinity of the proposed blasting zone.

SITE FORMATION

Atkins has been responsible for lots of site formation designs. Close liaison with clients and the project Architects to work out the platform requirements is the key success to major site formation works. Different preliminary site formation options are drafted up at early stage to facilitate clients to determine the most suitable and cost effictive development options. The major ongoing site formation work is the site formation works for Discovery Bay Master Plan 7.0. Its total site area is greater than 10 ha. Works involved approximately 50m high slopes cutting into the hillside and forming of retaining structure up to 20m high. Total cut and fill volume is estimated to be 500,000m 3 .

We had also completed the site formation works for Discovery Bay Master Plan 6.0, which covered a site area of more than 40ha with about 1.6million m 3 of earth excavation.

NATURAL TERRAIN HAZARD STUDY

Atkins has been at the forefront of natural terrain hazard assessments (NTHA) - combining our geotechnical and risk assessment expertise. Other than carrying out NTHA for government, private developers and utility companies, we had also been responsible for setting the design guideline for Highway Department (HyD).

DEEP EXCAVATION (EXCAVATION & LATERAL SUPPORT)

Atkins has extensive experience on design of excavation and lateral support for deep excavation, which included steel sheet-pile wall, pipe pile wall, bore-pile wall, diagram wall, etc. It ranged from basement excavation for property development to stations and railway line of metro system.

We have lots of experience in designing alternative shoring systems for contractors, which are cost effective, suit site/ground condition and tie-in with contractor's proposed construction method.

We have also been responsible for lots of temporary works design for Contractors on pipe jacking. In addition to the design of jacking and receiving pits, we also design the sleeve pipe and predict the settlements.
